No (more) marvelous superheroes! No "Unknown Armies"! Join "The Invisibles" instead!

„The Invisibles“ von Grant Morrison wurde von DC Comics unter dem Label Vertigo von 1994 bis 2000 verlegt. Vor Kurzem, Ende August 2012, erschien „The Invisibles Omnibus“, eine Hardcover-Sammlung der vollständigen Serie.

Worum geht es? Mehr oder weniger um eine „esoterroristische“ Zelle von Freiheitskämpfern, die mit allen Mitteln, also auch mit Gewalt, Magie und Zeitreisen gegen jegliche Form der Unterdrückung aufbegehrt. Exemplarisch vertreten sie den Kampf zwischen „The Invisible College“ und den „Archons of Outer Church“, außerirdischen bzw. außerdimensionalen Göttern, welche die unachtsame Menschheit ohne deren Wissen versklavt. Kommt einem dieses Plot nicht irgendwie bekannt vor?

You think you’re fighting for ‘freedom’. From what? From whom? Your chains are imaginary. The mass of the people are free; free to live and work and die. How dare you presume to ‘liberate’ them from their comfortable lives? How you must loathe yourself; so eager to struggle against anything but your own inadequacy. The truth is, you long to be like us but because you cannot fit into society, you dream of overthrowing it. What is this infantile urge to destroy which others have labored to build?

Die Comicwelt bietet so viel mehr als abgedroschene Superhelden. Ich arbeitete bestimmt ein Jahrzehnt in verschiedenen Comicläden und das Phänomen „Superhelden“ will sich mir noch immer nicht erschließen. Jedes Jahr starte ich einen Exkurs in dieses Genre. Meist überkommt mich sehr schnell ein Gefühl der Mattigkeit und Langeweile. Dieses „falsche“ Spiel mit Symbolen und Bedeutungen verklebt meine Synapsen.

Let’s face it; regular monthly superhero comic books have taken on the look and smell of old men’s pants. It’s hardly a surprise comics lost the teenage audience or that the adult audience is now bored and irritated by the endless recycling of images they’ve already seen and words they’ve already read.

Aus diesem Grund wird es an dieser Stelle um die andere Welt der Comics gehen.

Wer sich auf die Spurensuche nach der DNA, des Codes hinter dem Film „The Matrix“ (Gibt es mehr als einen Film?) oder den gelungenen Rollenspielen „Unknown Armies“ (John Tynes, Greg Stolze, Atlas Games) und bedingt auch „The Esoterrorists“ (Robin D. Laws, Gumshoe Pelgrane Press) begeben will, der kommt an den obskuren Archetypen „King Mob“, „Jack Frost“, „Lord Fanny“, „Boy“, und „Ragged Robin“ und der symbolträchtig aufgeladenen Geschichte nicht vorbei. Dr. Nick James schreibt dazu mit „Opting for Ontological Terrorism: Freedom and Control in Grant Morrison’s The Invisibles“ einen spannenden wissenschaftlichen Aufsatz über die Serie.

Das ist der Stoff, aus dem bizarre und außerordentliche Abenteuer gemacht sind. So, long Superman (Spiderman, [place your favorite superhero here])!

Bedauerlichweise kostet „The Invisibles Omnibus“ rund 150$. Via bookdepository.com (nicht *.co.uk) wird dieser absolute Lesetipp aktuell (28.09.2012) für rund 78 € portofrei angeboten. Preisgünstigere Angebote innerhalb der EU fand ich nicht.

PS: Möglicherweise kenne ich einfach nicht die „richtigen“ Superhelden.
